Conference Description:

The 2017 Dr. Paul Janssen Award Symposium will honor Dr. Douglas C. Wallace for his groundbreaking work on mitochondrial genetic inheritance and the role of mitochondria in medicine. The Mitochondrion, the primary regulator of cellular energy metabolism, has additional diverse cellular functions, including in cell signaling, cell cycle regulation, and reactive oxygen species generation. Dr. Wallace made the landmark discovery that human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is maternally inherited. He and others have since shown that mtDNA mutations and mitochondrial damage contribute to or cause a wide range of diseases, including metabolic and degenerative diseases, cancer, and other age-related diseases. During this symposium, Dr. Wallace and fellow prominent scientists, including Michio Hirano, MD, of Columbia University, Carla Koehler, PhD, of the University of California, Los Angeles, and Gerald S. Shadel, PhD, of the Yale School of Medicine will discuss the diverse roles of mitochondria in human health.
