The Sixth International Conference on "Middle Eastern and North African Popular Culture"
Vienna, Austria,
7 - 10 September 2011
The Institute of Oriental Studies at the University of Vienna and the University of Oxford, UK, are organising this Conference. One of the objectives is to debate both the continuing cultural specificities of the peoples and cultures of the region, as well as the effects of globalisation in bringing more contact and convergence between them.
Popular culture has had a great and lasting impact on the way of life of the populations of the Middle East and North Africa. While the Arabic language and its culture are two major factors which unite these two areas of the world, there are other cultural commonalities which extend to the non-Arabic speaking peoples of the area, historically or in the present day, including Turks, Iranians, Maltese, Kurds, and Berbers, among others. One of the objectives of this 6th International Conference is to debate both the continuing cultural specificities of the peoples and cultures of the region, as well as the effects of globalisation in bringing more contact and convergence between them. Five earlier conferences were held at Oxford (2000), Tunis (2002), the United Arab Emirates (2004), Morocco (2006) and Algeria (2008).
Among the main themes will be:
• the modern media and popular culture
• popular culture and globalisation
• popular literature: traditional poetry, story-telling
• popular song between modernity and tradition
• popular wisdom: proverbs, anecdotes
• traditional and contemporary popular theatre
• cinema
• the impact of popular culture on social development
Outline proposals for papers should be submitted by email to
popcult.orientalistik@univie.ac.at by 1 February 2011.
