There have been rapid changes and unprecedented transformations in the Arabian Gulf during the past two decades as a result of the implementation of various forms of technology. One of the most effective applications of technology in the Gulf is represented in the growing use of new or cyber media. To date, literature dealing with the impact of cyber media on the social transformation on Arab Gulf societies is scant.

The book aims at understanding the full range of the Arab Gulf information environment through focusing on its new media, in general and cyber media, in particular. Cyber media is an effective agent of social transformation in that it provides people with information, shapes their modes of communication and affects their patterns of thought and behavior. Cyber media is socially and culturally pertinent because it is inextricably bound with certain choices and interactions enacted through an interwoven web of people, institutions, and cultures.

Through focusing on case studies from Arab Gulf countries, the manuscript seeks to establish a scholarly dialogue so as to achieve better understanding of both the impact of cyber media on socio-cultural transformations (experienced within and across local contexts) and the impact of social factors (including economic and political among other elements) on the use of cyber media.

Thus, the book aims to:

- Provide a platform for academics and researchers to debate the growing role of cyber media (including, for example, cyber circulation, e-communication and digital visual language) in transforming social interactions in the Arab Gulf.
-Discuss the cultural and socio-economic frameworks in which various forms of cyber media operate in Arab Gulf countries.
-Examine the role played by cyber media in shaping people’s perceptions of reality.
-Expound the interplay between global, regional and local cultures in the rapidly changing societies of the Gulf.
The book addresses, but is not limited to, the following issues and topics:
- Production and consumption of the images and content provided by cyber media, cyber-forums, and other forms of cyber communication.
- Changes in patterns of social networking and business interactions between people, communities, and institutions (electronic communications, internet-based networking, e-mail, cyberspace, cyber-circulation, websites, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, and so like).
- Cyber media and social issues (freedom, gender and age differences in dealing with new media, online social media, online contact/dating, and so like).
-Cyber media and education (digital devices of information, e-learning resources and knowledge).
-Heritage and e-Folklore (Online folk cyber-circulation, the role of government institutions in conserving local cultural heritage).
- Local people’s attitudes toward cyber media (acceptance, resistance and criticism).
-Challenges facing the ‘virtual’ world of the Internet in the Arab Gulf.
